A wise man once said that movement is life.

(Jules Verne)

Human beings are designed to move. From our earliest origins as foragers and hunter gatherers we have always moved as part of our daily lives.

As we evolved to use animals to help us farm we still had to move to survive whether ploughing a field or collecting food.

As we became more ‘sophisticated’ and developed these things we now call ‘jobs’ the vast majority of these jobs were manual in nature and required us to move, lift, run and recover. There were no gyms as there was no need for them, work itself and daily life was enough.

Through the industrial revolution we saw the start of mechanisation of manual jobs and this took us towards where we are today where in the last 50 years we have lost hundreds of millions of manual jobs and in todays world the majority of us can get through each day without any physical exertions whatsoever.

Millions upon millions of us have jobs where we drive to work, sit in an office all day before driving home where if we choose we can order food and sit on the couch all night. Even household tasks such as laundry or even vacuuming have been made effort free with the introduction of robot vacuums and similar ‘labour saving’ items.

And where has this got us?

The western world contains the sickest, most obese, unhappiest generation in human history. There are many answers but number one is to MOVE.

So I need to join a gym then?

Don’t get me wrong, gyms can be great but most people find them intimidating, unfriendly and see going to the gym as a penance.

Movement has to become part of your life and if it’s not, if it’s just a bolt on accessory it will just fall off when life starts shaking, and life will always shake.
